Resume Writing
- Be clear and concise.
- Use universal fonts such as Times New Roman or Arial.
- Try to stay with 10 or 12 point font size.
- Provide all of your contact information on every page.
- Begin with most recent work history.
- Only use more than one page if you are providing enough information about previous jobs that is directly related to the job you are applying for.
- Only use a second page if you can completely fill the page.
- Use numbers and percentages when describing goal accomplishments.
- Check and re-check spelling and grammar.
- Always be prepared to provide job and personal references.
Cover Letter Writing
- Always provide a cover letter!
- Use this as an opportunity to expand the details of your resume to describe your experiences and work ethic.
- Highlight your specific skills and experience pertaining to the position (or industry) you are applying for.
- Format as a professional business letter.
- Express your eagerness to learn more about the job position.
- Provide your phone number and possibly an email address.
- Thank the recipient for taking the time to review your credentials.
- Personally sign your salutation.
Interviewing
- Be on time (or early!).
- Gather all directions and paperwork the day before so you are prepared.
- Do not wear strong perfumes or colognes.
- Do not overdo make up or hairstyles.
- Do wear conservative clothing; you can always express yourself with a decorative scarf or tie.
- Stick with navy or grey suits or skirt sets.
- Try to maintain eye contact with interviewer. If there is more than one, be sure to make eye contact throughout the interview with each person in the room.
- Keep your responses informative and try to use specific examples from your past to answer the question.
- Remain confident and be yourself!
- Always follow up with a hand written thank you letter to the interviewer.
